ISCOM adjuvant technology platform
ISCOM technology is based on quillaja saponins and the complex formed by the saponin molecules when mixed with cholesterol and phospholipid. Our products are based on these substances and the complexes they form when allowed to interact under specific stoichiometric conditions. The resulting complex, typically a 40 nm diameter open cage-like structure, is known as a Matrix. If the antigen is incorporated in the structure, the resulting particle is an ISCOM.

Isconova's adjuvant technology is a modern, general-purpose immune-modulating technology platform that fits the specific needs of almost any vaccine or immunology development. Its specific properties include strong antibody and cell-mediated immune responses induced by low antigen doses, long duration immune responses, and low risk for allergic reactions or other adverse events. The first generation of ISCOM technology was developed by Professor Bror Morein and co-workers in the mid 1980s. In this generation most vaccines were built by including the antigen as part of the ISCOM particles. The first industrial use was established in the early 1990´s.
The second generation of the ISCOM technology was developed in the 1990s and here the ISCOM's were made as stand alone particles, Matrix, with the antigen admixed. This increases flexibility in vaccine design. This is now commercial available.
Isconova's further development and improvement of the technology has now resulted in a third generation, the Isconova Low-tox adjuvants that addresses a unique safety profile for vaccines. High efficacy, antigen flexibility in combination with low toxicity are the hallmarks of the third generation. Human prophylaxis applications but also applications for very sensitive animal species such as cats are at present under development (See Proofs of Low-tox technology).
AbISCO® adjuvants are based on ISCOM® technology, and are thus well understood and proven throughout the research community. Due to the outstanding results of using ISCOM® technology-based adjuvants, plus repeated requests from the research community, Isconova now provides convenient, ready-to-use AbISCO® adjuvants optimized for research use in antibody production and immune response studies.
