Isconova AB, announced today that it has secured financing of 30 million Swedish kronor ( 3,3 m€ ) from InnovationsKapital, a leading Nordic venture capital firm, and a group of private investors. Isconova is a pioneer in vaccine adjuvant technology, with a proprietary, safe and effective ISCOM technology.

"We are extremely pleased to have attracted the support of InnovationsKapital, who have a successful record of backing innovative growth biotech companies in Scandinavia. This new investment will allow Isconova to increase our production capacity and to invest in marketing,” said Bengt Falk, Isconova’s CEO. “It will enable us to build on our existing growth in the animal vaccine sector. We will also be able to accelerate our activities in human vaccines where we already have a very promising partnership on an influenza vaccine."

Isconova’s scientific excellence in the vaccine adjuvant field is backed by commercial validation through several agreements with major healthcare partners and on-market veterinary vaccines. “We feel excited about Isconova’s future,” commented Johan Rask and Ulf Tossman at InnovationsKapital.

Isconova’s adjuvant makes vaccines more protective and longer-lasting. This fills a critical need for safe and effective adjuvants in the fast-growing vaccine industry. Bioteknikföretaget Isconova i Uppsala har utsett Lars Gårdö, tidigare bla VD för investmentbolaget Atle och ordförande i 3i Nordic, till ny ordförande. Isconova är ett världsledande bolag inom adjuvansteknologi och bedriver tillsammans med internationella partner utveckling av nya vacciner för humant och veterinärt bruk.

Styrelsen förstärks samtidigt med flera framstående företrädare för bioteknik- och läkemedelsindustrin. Professor Alf Lindberg, fd forskningschef för vaccinbolaget Aventis Pasteur är ett av de främsta namnen inom vaccinforskningen i världen. Eva-Lotta Allan är Chief Business Officer hos bioteknikbolaget Ablynx i Belgien med ansvar för strategi och affärsutveckling.

De nya utnämningarna innebär en genomgripande förändring av styrelsen i Isconova. Bolaget har under 2006 och 2007 utvecklat en ny generation av sin adjuvans-teknologi och samtidigt investerat i produktionsteknik för att klara en lönsam expansion. Bolaget prognostiserar en omsättning på ca 15 msek 2007 med flerfaldig ökning de närmast följande åren.

Bolaget har också i år tilldelats ett forskningsanslag på 25 msek från amerikanska försvaret för att utveckla immunförstärkande substanser.

Influenza is the most common respiratory viral disease in horses. The increased mobility of horses and exposure to new kinds of influenza strains drives the need for new and more effective influenza vaccines. Researchers from Intervet and Isconova have succeeded in creating a vaccine with outstanding properties that can effectively protect horses from essentially all currently known influenza infections known today, including the most recent ones.

Matrix, 40 nanometer particles are built by a natural compound, Quillaja Saponin and lipids. The Matrix can be used in all kinds of animal and human vaccines and provides strong long and broad protection.
